I am against rape and every form of Gender based Violence. Most times, when we speak out against rape and rapists, some people look at us as feminists. That’s because majority of the people involved in this campaign are women. But rape really has no gender. Our boys are sexually assaulted every now and then especially the younger ones.
Some of us have seen the destructive effect of rape while many have experienced it first hand and therefore do not need anyone to tell them what it feels like.
RAPE is a crime against humanity. It is the violation of one’s human rights and has no gender.
In my work as an activist, I have met many young people whose lives were ruined because they were raped sometimes ago. While some are living with the feeling of insecurity, lack of trust towards all and other psychologically related traumas. So many women and young girls have ended up with unwanted pregnancies, HIV aids, vesicle vaginal fistula and other sexually transmitted diseases. Those who were not so lucky like Uwa Omozuwa and ….. did not live to tell their stories as their journeys on Earth were terminated untimely.
A Rapist is a thief: They still the future of our children and threaten them with death. They take advantage of their victim’s helplessness and silence and perpetrate the act because they believe that no one will stop them… Not anymore!
Rapists are murderers. The attempt to cover up their evil acts leaves them with no better idea than to murder their victims.
Rape has no gender, and should not be seen as a female thing. Few weeks ago, I was privileged to speak on this topic and to my greatest surprise, many men testified about how they were sexually assaulted while growing up.
A man can also be gang raped, so why make it look like rape is a female thing!

Since the lockdown began, there has been sudden increase in rape cases in Nigeria. The media has it that reported cases as at June was 717 cases, and we are not ignorant of the fact that most rape cases in Nigeria go unreported.
Recently, the case of a man who raped his three months old daughter has been on air while another man impregnated his daughter. What of the 7days old girl who was raped by a young man? Is it the young boy two who was raped by a 24 years old nanny? An 80 years old woman was also raped. Some like Uwa were raped and murdered.
I wish to call on all policy makers, law enforcement agencies, non-governmental organization, private and public sectors and all well-meaning Nigerians to stand up and join in this fight against rape.
A lot of the prostitutes you and I are condemning today are products of rape and gender based violence.
We can no longer look away. This “E NO CONCERN ME” attitude of many must end because E CONCERN ALL OF US.
Penalty for rape should be upgraded to life imprisonment or death. We can no longer pretend. The time to enforcement the existing law against rapist by Nigerian Law Enforcement Agents is now.
Secondly, we must stop stigmatization and the victimization of rape victims.
They are victims not criminals. No more discriminations against them. We need to support them and help them to understand that we share in their pains, and feels the psychological, physical and emotional traumas they are going through and that we are here for them.
